Upcoming Competitions

Entry fee: R30 per entry unless otherwise specified. CASH, CHEQUES or ELECTRONIC TRANSFERS only please.

  • December 2009 / January 2010: The first chapter of a novel.
  • February 2010: Slam poetry. Maximum 30 lines.
  • March 2010: Short story with the first line: “The 2010 Soccer World Cup … ". Maximum 1 500 words.
  • April 2010: Film review aimed at the Mail & Guardian. Maximum 1 000 words. Shaun de Waal's reviews are good examples, see the newspaper itself or go to their website to read more film reviews.
  • May 2010: Short story. A love story with a twist in the tale. Maximum 2 500 words.
  • June 2010: Radio play. Thirty minutes. The topic is open and there is no character limit. If you are uncertain of how long the play is, read it out loud. Running over time will leave you unplaced.
  • Animal Antics Competition: The SAWC is publishing a compilation of animal antics, so submit your short story (max. 2 500 words); poem (max. 30 lines), comic strip or any other genre to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it before 20 June 2010 and be published! Entry is free.
  • July 2010: Science fiction story. Maximum 2 000 words. What is science fiction all about?
  • Dave Short Essay Competition: My first serious submission. Maximum 800 words. Closing date is 31 July 2010. The prizes for this one: 1st R200; 2nd R60; 3rd R40.   • August 2010: Parody of a classic: fiction (extract from a novel or parody of a complete short story). State whose novel/extract you are writing a parody about. Maximum 2 000 words. What is parody?
  • September 2010: Mills & Boon type romantic story. Maximum 2 000 words.
  • October 2010: Romantic poetry. Maximum 30 lines.
  • Annual Short Story Competition. You don't need to be a member to enter this one. More details and requirements appear here.
  • November 2010: Essay. Topic: Time to tell. Maximum 800 words. Provide your own title.
  • December 2010: First chapter of a novel. Maximum 4 000 words. Must include a one page synopsis. No children’s stories allowed.
