HERE’S HOW
Every now and then the South African Writers’ Circle holds a “Flash Cash” competition which is open to all South African residents 16 years of age or older. This is a creative writing challenge to encourage the development of the difficult skill of writing “flash fiction”. We believe that youngsters from their mid-teens have the creative maturity and language skills to succeed, just as much as older people.
Firstly, write a story of no more than 500 words (excluding the title). You have roughly two weeks to do this, and it MUST include the two short phrases, in any order, which you will find above. You can choose any topic or theme, but your story must be in English that is good enough to be published: any submission that needs editing or has proofreading errors will be rejected, without refund, so get a trusted friend to check it for you!
Next, decide on a pseudonym or pen name. Prepare your story double-spaced in MS Word, headed with “Title by (your Pseudonym)” and the word count. Check through it again! Sleep on it, then check it yet again! Don’t worry about copyright: it’s yours.
Lastly, complete the Competitions Entry Form found in our website, and send it in by e-mail with your story, and with proof of payment of the R50 entry fee* (per entry), all as separate attachments, to competitions.sawc@gmail.com. Save and keep copies of everything, please.
Our next closing date is the end of February.
The winning author gets R500, and the winning story will be published in the next SAWC newsletter, Write Now, with your permission.
The judges’ decisions are final and no discussions can be entered into. Your stories are judged anonymously. If your creative muse is really on fire, you may send in as many stories as you like, under the same pseudonym and using the two required phrases, and each with its R50 entry fee. Entries will NOT be individually critiqued.
