It is with great sadness that we announce Patrick Coyne passed away on Monday, 4th November.
Patrick was a long-standing and active member of the South African Writers’ Circle. He served as Vice-Chairman and then as Chairman from March 2018 until recently when his health deteriorated.
He was known to us as a well-published author, his best-known book being ‘A Guide to South Africa’s Mountain Passes and Poorts’, describing the journeys that he and his wife Helen undertook in their 1960 Rover.
Patrick entered and won many of the SAWC competitions and judged numerous others. He was always pleased when one of his prolific articles was published in the press, most recently a piece on the Durban Playhouse, published in the local Saturday paper only a few weeks ago.
In my position as Vice-Chairman, Patrick and I worked closely together and enjoyed many long telephone conversations on numerous subjects. He was erudite, amusing and never forgot his roots as a teacher. I will remember his unfailing support and encouragement with great fondness.
On behalf of the committee and members of the SAWC, Rest in Peace, dear Patrick.
